Choosing a point of impact zero for an offset scope mount
An offset scope mount changes the relationship between the sight line and the rifle bore. That difference may be small on paper, but it can produce a noticeable shift in point of impact at hunting distances, especially when the optic is mounted at 45 degrees or several centimetres to the side.
The best zero depends on the job. A rifle used for close-range feral animal control may benefit from a different zero than a hunting rifle carried across open country. Cartridge, projectile, barrel length, optic height, expected distance and the position of the offset sight all matter.
Australian hunters also need to work within state and territory firearms laws, approved hunting conditions and range rules. A sound zero is part of responsible shooting, yet it does not replace a safe backstop, a reliable identification of the target or compliance with licence conditions.
The aim is a repeatable point of impact that matches the distances and shooting positions you genuinely expect to use. Zeroing from a solid bench is only the first step; confirming the result from field positions is what makes the setup useful.
Understand what the offset changes
A conventional scope sits above the bore, while an offset optic is usually displaced to the left or right and sometimes slightly higher. The projectile begins at the bore axis, but the sight line starts elsewhere. The two lines meet at the chosen zero distance, then separate again as range changes.
With a 45-degree red-dot or compact optic, the offset is often used as a fast alternative for close targets. A 50-metre zero can be practical for many centrefire hunting rifles because it keeps the close-range aiming reference simple and limits the effect of the lateral displacement at ordinary bush distances.
A side-mounted scope can behave differently. If the mount places the optic several centimetres to the right, the rifle may print noticeably left or right at short range. The correction is not always intuitive, so the rifle should be fired at more than one distance rather than relying on a single group.
Match the zero to the rifle’s work
For a general-purpose .223 Remington or .308 Winchester used around rural properties, a 50-metre offset zero often gives a useful compromise. It allows a quick confirmation on a modest-sized target and keeps the sighting system practical for close shots. The exact result still depends on ammunition and the chosen reticle.
A 100-metre zero may suit an offset optic intended for deliberate shots in more open terrain. It makes data collection straightforward at many Australian rifle ranges and aligns neatly with ballistic charts. The trade-off is that a close-range shot can carry a larger horizontal or vertical offset before the projectile and sight line converge.
Think about the style of shooting involved. Lessons from open-country hunting show why distance estimation and a stable shooting position become increasingly important in exposed terrain. That principle applies to Australian plains game and long paddock shots, even when the rifle wears an offset optic for backup use.
Confirm the point of impact at useful distances
Begin at a short, safe distance with the rifle supported firmly and the firearm handled according to range rules. Use a large paper target so that the first shots cannot be lost. Once the group is safely on paper, move to the intended zero distance and fire a group rather than chasing individual holes.
Record the centre of the group, not the location of one shot. Three-shot groups can reveal a rough setting, while five-shot groups provide a better indication of repeatability when ammunition and conditions permit. Allow the barrel to cool in the same way it would during normal use.
Confirm the offset optic at a second distance, such as 25 and 50 metres or 50 and 100 metres. Measure both vertical and horizontal movement. A simple range card showing point-of-impact offsets is more useful in the field than an assumed ballistic figure copied from a box of ammunition.
Test the mount and the shooting position
An offset system is only as dependable as its mount, screws and return-to-zero performance. Follow the manufacturer’s torque guidance, use the correct driver and inspect the fasteners after the first range session. Recheck them after transport, rough movement through scrub or repeated removal and refitting.
Shoot from realistic positions after the bench work is complete. A standing, kneeling or supported field position can change the rifle’s movement and the way the optic is presented to the eye. Practise bringing the rifle to the shoulder without tilting it, since an inconsistent cant can alter the apparent point of aim.
Australian conditions make this especially relevant. A rifle carried in a ute around Dubbo, through Victorian timber or along a Queensland property may experience dust, heat and repeated handling. At a busy range near Sydney or Melbourne, use a clearly marked target and follow the range officer’s directions when changing between the main scope and offset optic.
Account for Australian use and regulations
The zero should reflect legal hunting distances, permitted species and the conditions attached to the relevant licence or property permission. Firearms regulation differs between states and territories, and transport, storage, firearm categories and hunting arrangements are governed locally. Check current requirements through the relevant authority rather than relying on advice from an online forum.
A compact offset sight can be valuable in thick bush or for a rapid transition at short distance, but it is not a substitute for a suitable firearm and lawful ammunition. Hunters should also remember that suppressors, night-vision equipment and other accessories may have additional restrictions or approval requirements in Australia.

The final choice should be based on measured groups with the exact rifle, ammunition and optic combination. Keep a written record of the zero, ammunition lot, weather and distance, then carry a small range card with the rifle. In practice, a carefully confirmed 50-metre zero is a strong starting point for many offset setups, provided the second-distance check shows where the projectile actually lands.
